The market is so saturated with superhero properties at the moment that it has become more and more difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. Anything featuring superheroes that stands out as different in any way from the standard formula is both an outlier and a welcome salve in these overwhelming times.

Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic series "The Boys" is ripe for such an undertaking as it features a world wherein superheroes are more popular than Hollywood stars, more powerful than politicians, and abuse their power more often than they use it for good. Following their involvement with AMC's adaptation of another Ennis title, Preacher, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are now bringing The Boys to Amazon Prime, where this filthy and fun series can play out without any substantial ratings restrictions.

Dredd's Karl Urban stars as Billy Butcher, the leader of the eponymous team of vigilantes who have made it their mission to take down corrupt superheroes by any means necessary. The series also stars Elisabeth Shue, Erin Moriarty, and Gossip Girlhunk Chace Crawford, in what promises to be a down and dirty—mostly dirty—take on the genre that is sorely needed right now.

The Boys first season debuts in its entirety on Amazon PrimeJuly 26.
