The Wedding Banquet (1993)

Brief Nudity

Review

In this early Ang Lee film often compared to La Cages aux Folles, Wai-Tung (Winston Chao) is a young, gay Chinese real estate entreprenuer from Taiwan who lives in New York with his American partner, Simon (Mitchell Lichtenstein). Wai-Tung’s parents, still abroad and unaware that he is gay, are constantly calling and writing about when he's going to finally settle down with a nice Chinese girl, and decide to take matters into their own hands by utilizing a local dating service to find him the perfect spouse (and despite being a woman, she is actually pretty perfect - she’s fluent in five languages, has two PhDs, and is a talented opera singer). At the same time, Wai-Tung meets a young Chinese artist named Wei-Wei (May Chin) who has been living in one of the lofts he owns but can’t afford to stay. Simon then comes up with the idea of telling the parents that Wai-Tung already has a fiance, namely Wei-Wei, which makes it a win-win. She gets a green card and can stay in the country and Wa-Tung’s parents are placated. Except his parents insist on flying to America to throw them a proper 300-guest wedding banquet, leading Wai-Tung, Simon, and We-Wei to perform a shenanigan-filled charade of domestic life leading up to their sham wedding. This includes some hints of skin from May Chin as she snuggles in bed with Winston on their wedding night followed by a flash of her funbags as she gets out of the shower and slips on a silk nighty. It’s not exactly a banquet’s worth of nudity but May’s mams are still a feast for the eyes!
