Annie Clark, aka musician St. Vincent, teams with ex-girlfriend and fellow musician Carrie Brownstein of Portlandia fame for the mockumentary The Nowhere Inn (2020). The out and proud brunette lesbian duo wrote and co-star as  thinly veiled versions of themselves where St. Vincent decides to make a documentary about her upcoming tour and hires Brownstein to direct. Dakota Johnson also co-stars, playing "herself" as Annie's new girlfriend, and the lines between intimacy and professionalism begin to blur as Brownstein finds herself wracked with jealousy over Johnson's relationship with Clark. With a byzantine plot that's almost impossible to explain, the film just sort of finds its own groove and wavelength, hoping that viewers are savvy enough to get on that wavelength and enjoy the film. It's undeniable that the concert footage in and of itself is worth the price of admission, but fans raised on an endless stream of rock docs—not to mention the ever present spectre of This is Spinal Tap—will find a lot here to really sink their teeth into. If none of that is working for you, there's also lots and lots of lanky brunette flesh on display, though no actual nudity in the flick. Annie Clark is frequently in skimpy clothing or sometimes wearing nothing at all. 36 minutes in, Carrie Brownstein films Annie and Dakota Johnson in lingerie as they press against one another and moan a whole lot. With all that skin on display, it's kind of a sin that there's no visible nudity, but St. Vincent knows you always leave your audience wanting more.
