The Medium (2021)

Banjong Pisanthanakun, the Thai writer and director of the horror flick Shutter (2004), is back with a new vision of horror, The Medium (2021)! The film opens with a documentary crew traveling to a small village in the Isan region of Thailand to meet Nim (Sawanee Utoomma), a local medium who is possessed by the spirit of a deity known as Bayan. This deity has a history of possessing the women of Nim's family, which also has a history of tragedy befalling the male members of the family. Nim has invited the documentary crew to capture the ceremony in which she will pass the spirit of Bayan on to her daughter Ming (Narilya Gulmongkolpech). The ritual seems to go off without a hitch, but Ming soon begins displaying aberrant behavior including bouts of multiple personalities, all of which relate to some deep dark family secrets. Nim suspects that it wasn't the benevolent spirit of Bayan that took hold of Ming, but a violent and evil spirit. She must now call on her friend Santi (Boonsong Nakphoo), a more experienced Shaman, to help her exorcise this demon that has taken hold of Ming. This Asian riff on The Exorcist truly leans into the more sensational elements in its story and is sure to have more conservative audience members clutching their pearls quite frequently! While possessed, the lovely Narilya Gulmongkolpech rips open her shirt to expose her bare breasts before launching into an absolutely insane diatribe that might even make the devil of The Exorcist blush! The Medium will make you Extra Large!
