Reuben, Reuben

Reuben, Reuben (1983)

Brief Nudity

Review

Whether it’s due to their embrace of rhyme or their rejection of reason, poets (particularly poets who spout about with a randy, cute Scottish accent) seem to work their most mesmerizing verbal spells upon susceptible, lovelorn ladies. The wily word man whose name is repeated in the title of Reuben, Reuben (1983) might strike the New England daughters and matrons who fall prey to his thrusting strophes as something of a novelty, but being considered a curious fluke does not negate the fact that the flaky literary lad has had his fill and more of them. Of course poetic justice cannot be kept at bay forever, and when the euphonious phony gives his heart for true and for real, the disaster is beyond his wildest metaphor.
